About Me

I'm Dimitri,

I was born in Brussels, Belgium, and grew up in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
I displayed an affinity for the Arts at a very early age and as an adolescent received an eclectic formation in Art from ‘Poto-Mitan' Centre D'art as well as from Claude Dambreville and Raymond Olivier.

In 1985, I moved to New Mexico in the United States, where for a short time I was drawing typical scenes of my beloved Haiti out of sheer nostalgia. In 1989, I moved to New York where I pursued a bachelor degree in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts.

Using my academic formation to perfect my drawing techniques, I began again to portray Haiti in 1998. I used pastel crayons and ink on paper to depict my sceneries. My compositions always involve many faceless people pictured in the various aspects of Haitian life.

Often asked why I do not put faces on my subjects, I draw faceless people not individuals to better illustrate the energy of our people together in celebration, spirituality and everyday life. I called them my 'ti tonton’ which is creole for little characters.

In 2009, I decided to begin a new series using computer aided digital painting. With this medium, I am now able to expand my palette and technique to bring more life to my 'Ti Tonton' and create a more vivid, colorful, and exhuberant depiction of Haiti on my new found canvas.

I have exhibited my work in Texas, Florida, New Mexico and New York.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of
my products.
